Fridays are special at Solid Rock Community School. That is when we host all of our electives. Rather than once a day for 60 minutes like on a traditional school calendar, our electives take place once a week for the whole day. This schedule allows more time for students to fully immerse themselves in the elective without the disruption of class changes. It provides ample time to set up, take a field trip, get into the flow of the activity, and engage deeply in hands-on learning experiences. This extended time frame enhances the learning experience, enabling students to explore their interests thoroughly and develop new skills in a supportive and uninterrupted environment. Workshops: Most Fridays, students participate in "Friday Workshops," fully immersive electives designed to enrich their learning experience. These workshops are offered during the school day, allowing more students to participate compared to after-school clubs. Students receive elective credit for their participation in these workshops. Workshops rotate throughout the year and are led by teachers, professionals, and hobbyists, providing a diverse range of topics and activities. Friday workshops vary yearly but include electives like Art, Performing Arts, Dance, Lego Robotics, Circus Arts, Electronics, Music, Language, Strategy Games, Cultural Journey, Forensics, Eco-Adventures, and much more. This unique program ensures that students can explore new interests and develop valuable skills in a hands-on, engaging environment. Community Day: Several Fridays a year we host a "Community Day" which is a time for students to experience learning as a natural by-product of activities and experiences beyond their assigned classes. This is a day where the students have complete responsibility for their time and can pursue their interests and passions through real life experiences and interactions. Teachers will have activities set up and students can roam freely from one class to another and spend as little or as much time in any activity as they choose. Whether it be an art class, playing a sport, watching a movie, or having a debate, the students are able to mix freely allowing for natural mentorship and peer learning. This interaction helps to foster a collaborative and respectful community.
